Five Films Which Highlight the Splendour of the Corset

Posted by

The influence of the silver screen is not to be underestimated. The elegant look the garment gives has been displayed at its best in everything from lavish period dramas to big budget films. Whether providing structure to a beautiful ball gown or as underwear beneath an everyday outfit, the corset has taken centre stage in numerous works. Here we list five of our favourite films which highlight the splendour of the corset. For advice about buying a corset, feel free to give us a call us on 0800 242 5528 and speak to a member of our friendly team today.

Casanova (2005)

This romantic drama starring Heath Ledger is loosely based on the life of legendary lover Giacomo Casanova. The notorious Venetian cavorts around the city before his dalliances get him in trouble with the authorities – and his leading lady Francesca (Sienna Miller) is soon also fighting for her life and freedom. It’s hard to miss the sumptuous gowns, but it’s what’s underneath them that really counts. Sienna Miller and Natalie Dormer both show off particularly beautiful corseted outfits.

Gangs of New York (2002)

Set in the mid-19th century in the Five Points district of Lower Manhattan, this film follows Bill “The Butcher” Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis) in his roles as crime boss and political kingmaker. Directed by Martin Scorsese, it’s a gripping piece of drama. The shots are quite subtle, but Cameron Diaz’s character Jenny Everdeane is seen in a number of different corsets which truly accentuate her figure.

Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Nicole Kidman stars in this pastiche-jukebox musical directed, produced and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. The plot follows young poet and writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) who falls in love with the terminally ill cabaret actress, courtesan and star of the Moulin Rouge Satine (Nicole Kidman). Few women wear a corset as well as Kidman in this visually stunning film.

Titanic (1997)

This classic tearjerker about the sinking of the passenger liner in the North Atlantic Ocean is not short of Edwardian corsetry. Kate Winslet, who plays an upper class young woman named Rose, shows off authentic period clothing with aplomb. While it is easy to be drawn into the tragic tale and the developing romance between Rose and lower class lad Jack (Leonard DiCaprio), there are plenty of splendid corsets to watch out for too.

A Room With A View (1985)

This production, based on E.M. Forster’s 1908 novel of the same name, stars Helena Bonham Carter as Lucy Honeychurch, an upper class girl coming of age on a holiday to Italy. Unleashed from the constraints of Edwardian society, Lucy drops her inhibitions and explores life and love on the continent. Bonham Carter wears some wonderful corsets in this magnificent film.
